Principles of Community Justice:
Restore the community
Bridge the gap between communities and courts
Knit together participants in the criminal justice system including Judges, prosecutors, and defence counsel
Help offenders deal with problems that lead to crime
Provide the courts with better information
Use existing court facilities in innovative ways
Principles of Restorative Justice:
- Respect: given equally to all participants in the process
- Inclusiveness: full participation and consensus
- Accountability: the offender takes responsibility for the behaviour that has harmed others
- Reparation: the parties decide what restitution or other measures are appropriate
- Restoration: restore the victim, the offender and the community through processes that recognize the needs of all parties and provide opportunities for these needs to be addressed
- Community Involvement: victims, offenders and communities are all included as key stakeholders in the restorative justice process
