Key Principles

Principles of Community Justice:

  • Restore the community
  • Bridge the gap between communities and courts
  • Knit together participants in the criminal justice system including Judges, prosecutors, and defence counsel
  • Help offenders deal with problems that lead to crime
  • Provide the courts with better information
  • Use existing court facilities in innovative ways
Principles of Restorative Justice:
  • Respect: given equally to all participants in the process
  • Inclusiveness: full participation and consensus
  • Accountability: the offender takes responsibility for the behaviour that has harmed others
  • Reparation: the parties decide what restitution or other measures are appropriate
  • Restoration: restore the victim, the offender and the community through processes that recognize the needs of all parties and provide opportunities for these needs to be addressed
  • Community Involvement: victims, offenders and communities are all included as key stakeholders in the restorative justice process
